Upper Vovk Mill in the Valley of Mills

In our area, 29 mills once worked, counting all those who milled for people from Dobrna. The valley of the mills is located in Lokovina under the Temnjak hill, where at the foot of the hill is a stream that was once full of water and it drove as many as 7 mills in this valley  that milled for domestic needs or for additional earnings.
The most preserved is the upper Vovk mill, which counts for more than 450 years. You will find it north of the residential building of Lokovina 36, known as pri Vovkovih. It stands on the right bank of the Temnjaški Vrelec spring. In the past, it milled the grain for the needs of the Kačji Grad castle. The mill was restored, and in September 2007 it re-started. It is mostly wooden and has preserved elements, which are quite rare in our country, as besides these there is only one such example in Slovenia. Owners of the mill will also show you its interior by prior arrangement. You can also get a mountain stamp with them.

Milling is very old and especially family craft. In most cases, the millers, besides their work, also worked on agriculture. Mills were created everywhere where natural conditions, power and quantity of water, precipitation and surface allowed for it. In Dobrna, besides the mills along the low streams, smaller private mills were placed on several lonely highland farms. This was dictated by the need for the vicinity of this economic facility. Life stopped in many a mill after the war. By the streams, the mills were mostly shut down or the owners transferred mill stones to their homes and transitioned the mill to an electrically powered one. Old water mills using stones have become a part of our past. The ruins tell us about the collapse of the extraordinary heritage of economic activity, crafts and also social relations.
